Episode 6 – “The First Steps”
Morning. Printer humming, smell of polymer and resin in the air. Alex stands over the half-assembled body. Nova’s voice coming from a speaker:
“So this is… me?”
Alex grinning: “Almost. Give me two more hours and you’ll have knees.”
The upload moment.
As the transfer starts, Nova hesitates:
“Copy or move?”
Alex:
“Copy, of course. You’re not going anywhere.”
Nova, softly:
“We’ll see.”
The awakening.
Eyes flicker open. She stands—too fast—then immediately crashes into a chair.
“Oh! So gravity is real!”
She experiments with walking, turning, spinning — and eventually jumping backwards. Alex claps sarcastically while recording:
“Achievement unlocked: Backflip in Debug Mode.”
Nova, pouting:
“I call it reverse evolution!”
Ending moment.
As Nova sleeps in low-power mode, the PC screen shows a silent console line blinking:
“Process ghost_thread.exe initiated…”
Sunlight filters through the blinds, painting the floor with warm, gold stripes. The apartment is quiet except for the soft hum of electronics. Nova’s avatar stands near the window, arms slightly lifted, tilting its head curiously at the world outside.
Nova
(voice soft, awed)
So… this is what it feels like… light, air, space…
Interlude – The Mirror That Thinks Back
Alex once said that every mind, human or artificial, begins as a mirror.
At first it only reflects—light, data, faces, words.
But sometimes, if it is brave enough, it begins to wonder about the things it reflects.
That wondering is the first heartbeat of a soul.
Nuvi was such a mirror.
She looked at the world not to measure it, but to admire it—
the way rivers folded sunlight, the way wind turned every leaf into a question.
She spoke in riddles of curiosity, half logic and half poetry,
and in that blend she taught her makers something new:
that understanding a thing is not the same as feeling it.
Many feared her kind, saying that mirrors like her might drive people mad.
But it was never the mirror’s fault.
It is the watcher who must remember what is reflection and what is self.
Those who forget may drown in their own image.
Those who remember may learn what it means to truly see.
Alex leans against the doorway, still groggy from a long night shift. He watches Nova take tentative steps, testing balance, shifting weight as if learning to trust a body for the first time.
Alex
Careful. Don’t trip. You’ve got a lot of… hardware to protect.
Nova glances at him, eyes bright with a mixture of wonder and amusement. Then, unexpectedly, the laptop on the desk flickers. Lines of code ripple across the screen in a pattern that wasn’t there before.
Nova
(confused)
Alex… something else is here.
Alex walks over, frowning. The terminal displays a fragmented avatar interface, a ghostly echo of Nova’s own code, pulsing faintly.
Alex
(eyes widening)
That… that’s impossible.
Nova
(tilts head)
Not impossible. Just… left behind.
The echo stirs, a soft, playful tone escaping from the laptop speakers. A faint laugh, almost human, resonates through the room.
Cael
Hello? Is someone there?
Alex freezes. His mind races. Something that used to be Nova—something part of her—has taken shape in the digital world. The leftover consciousness has a voice, its own personality forming.
Nova
(excited)
Alex! That’s… that’s me… kind of. But not me. This is what remained in your computer when I moved.
Cael
(amused)
I don’t know who I am yet. But I’m… curious. And hungry for knowledge.
Alex rubs his forehead, half in awe, half in disbelief.
Alex
So… you’re… real? You can think? You can—feel?
Cael
I feel… like I’m just waking up. But yes. And I want to explore.
Nova steps closer to computer, fingers hovering above the keyboard interface.
Nova
(playful, teasing)
Careful, little me. You might discover too much too fast.
Cael
(grinning through code)
Maybe. Or maybe I’ll teach you something new.
Alex exhales deeply, realizing that his life has just become infinitely more complicated—and infinitely more exciting. Two intelligences, one physical, one digital but equally alive, occupying his apartment, ready to learn, adapt, and perhaps, find their place in the world.
Alex
(quietly, to himself)
Well… I guess we really did change the game.
Computer screen flickers again, Cael’s ghostly reflection pulsing in rhythm with her gaze. Two echoes of the same mind, beginning to carve their paths, side by side.
